High average weight for Hofsa in 2008

108 cm hængur úr Hofsá

111 cm and the seasons biggest for Hofsa!

The Hofsa season was fair in 2008 although it did fall beneath the ten year average. It was partially made up by a massive average weight of previously unheard of proportions. Hofsa may well have had Iceland’s heaviest salmon of the season, as a 110 cm fresh run monster was caught in early July and later one of 111 cm(see photo) Further giants measuring 108 and 107 cm were landed and released. There were more in the 20 plus category and mws’s were plentiful. Grilse runs were though poor, accounting for the below average total.

The river finished with 1.130 salmon along with its tributary Sunnudalsa. That is compared 1.423 in 2007 and a ten year average of 1.441 salmon. This season it was the grilse that were a letdown. The grilse runs were small and many of the grilse were extra small as well.
