First salmon of 2009 officially landed!

A trout fisherman(probably hoping for a salmon!) fishing the beat Straumar, the junction of glacial river Hvita and clear rivers Nordura and Gljufura, landed a fresh run 8 pound salmon yesterday morning. The salmon season does not officially start until Friday morning, but this is far from being the first time trout fishermen trip over early running salmon.
The salmon was caught in the prolific „Bugt“ on Straumar. A few years ago a 12 pounder from the Straumar-beat was another pre season salmon, and even fewer years ago a sea trout angler caught a 12 pounder in late May on Tvera, which has a junction with the Hvita several kilometers further up the system. Most of these pre season salmon have been caught in this area, which is in the middle west of Iceland. Over the years the mws‘s have grown scarcer in the area, but while the Hvita was still netted and there were plenty of mws‘s around, the season used to start on the 20th of May. So it should come as no surprise that todays anglers are catching salmon from the remains of the old mws‘s late in May and early June.
We of course hope that the early runner caught in Straumar was simply one of very, very many, but we will find out to some extent on Friday.
