The brown trout fishing above the dam at Bru on the big Laxa in Thingeyjarsysla started sensationally. The first group on the Myvatnssveit beat hauled out 250 browns while the group opening the lower Laxardalur beat finished with 123. Neither beat has seen such a good start for years and a lot of the fish were very big.

Many have stated that Laxa in Þingeyjarsysla is the best brown trout river in the world and nothing so far this season undermines such a statement. The fishing has been quite simply fantastic and the downswing some thought they had seen the makings of last year was nowhere to be seen. On the contrary the trout are big, healthy and many, while the ecosystem as a whole seems to be in excellent shape.

„It was a fantastic fishing trip, we were having furious spells on every shift and even though we had to leave early, we have never landed as many browns on a single trip to Laxa,“ local angler Teitur Örlygsson told us. Upstream nymphing has been by far the most prolific technique so far while the traditional streamer fishing has for some reason not been working. Some anglers dug out their dry flies when the tempertures sored, and had some great action on them as well.

In some years many of the browns are a bit lean at this early stage of the season. However there were very few lean fish this time, most of them were fat and fighting fit. Many of them big as well. There were a lot of 60 cm plus trout and in such a huge river, cranking them in can take up to a half hour leaving anglers with aching biceps and wrists!
