Having a hell of a time up here, wish you were here!

The header sounds like a lyric from Pink Floyd and it perhaps is. But having taken a stopover for some brown trout fishing on Reykjadalsa up in the north this weekend, it was the first thing that came to mind when hunting for a fitting intro.

The salmon are not in the Reykja yet, that will happen next month. However the river is an amazing brown trout river and while we had some inhibitive cold weather on the Saturday, the temperture was far better on Sunday and that‘s when we had a really good day, landing several browns, mostly from the upper river, most of them ranging from 2 to just under 4 pounds. They were taking small streamer flies, most of them a local fly called Alda.

But the phrase „wish you were here“ does not apply entirely to the trout fishing. It also applies to the fact that this is the time of year to be in Iceland. While perhaps not for prime time salmon, without a doubt to participate in the most haunting time of the year. With the thriving bird life of the northland valleys booming at the moment, the summer vegetation moving into full bloom and the midnight sun turning the valleys into strange beautiful places, one can feel Nature‘s heartbeat pounding as it nears the climax of the short northern summer.
