The rivers are opening upp one after another these days and the fishing is gradually picking up in the first starters. Yesterday, Nordura became the first to reach triple figures. Overall the first days and weeks have been pretty good and the signs are that substantial grilse runs are starting to pour in.
According to the Angling Club of Reykjavík, Nordura reached the hundred fish mark yesterday and by noon today the river had produced 117 fish. Grilse are starting to dominate after fair mws runs were encountered earlier on. Yesterday morning a rod fishing the pool Austurkvísl on the bottom beat of Nordura stumbeld over a good run holding in the pool. During a hectic three hours they hooked ten and landed seven. All but one were fresh sea liced grilse.
The big ones have turned on the drama every now and then. A foreign guest fishing on Réttarhylsbrot a few days ago hooked a big one that went deep into his backing before breaking the leader. The next day, fishing the same pool, the same angler again hooked a big one. Again the fish ran hard and took out a lot of line. Eventually the fly pulled free and up it came, complete with the former days fly along with the short bit of leader that had broke off!
