Huge cock fish from Vatnsdalsa as slow start gains momentum

The starting group on Vatnsdalsa didn‘t start off all that well, being fishless after the first two shifts. But it was not the sign of what was to come, as the group went on to hook nine fish and land four of them, among them the biggest in Iceland so far, a 98 cm cock fish. The group finished at noon today.
„The conditions have not been favorable at all. We were fishing in severe cold and it rained so hard by night that we woke up to the drumming on the roof of the lodge. The mountain tops turned white again. Still, there were fish further up the river than I can remember at the start, over the twelve years I have been managing the river and we have caught salmon in the top pools of both the Vatnsdalsa and the tributary Alka. The four landed were all big ones, the biggest a 98 cm cock fish that took a floating Sunray in Torfhvammshylur, which is far up the valley. It was a majestic fish and probably weighed close to 20 pounds. The other three were two 84 cm and one 79 hen fish. Two were from Hnausastrengur. Two very big ones broke leaders in Holakvorn and Skriduvad. All in all we are very happy with the start as this is a quite good catch considering the conditions. We had quite a few brown trout as well, all of them of good size, ranging up to 5 pounds,“ the outfitter Pétur Pétursson told us this evening.
