Something that just dawned upon us

Brown trout are native to Iceland, stationary or sea run. Here we have a big sea trout from Eldvatn river. Iceland is not just a salmon mecca, far from it.....
Hello to all our readers. There are three of us managing these websites, www.anglingiceland.is and http://www.votnogveidi.is/ We are all quite comfortably middle aged and have been fishing for most of our already long lives. And we suddenly realized how privileged we are as anglers. We live in Iceland. What we feel is commonplace is not nessecarily so.
What got us thinking was a story one of our outfitters told us. He manages Reykjadalsá and Vatnsdalsá. The former is a hugely productive brown trout river with a fair stock of salmon as the summer drags on. The story was as following: The Reykja has a big French clientele. They come mostly for the brown trout and some of them even shy from the pools that hold salmon as well as they do not want the salmon interfearing with their dry fly fishing. Some Icelandic rivers have bigger specimens of brown trout than Reykja. Browns are native to Iceland, not implanted as in South America. Yet few have such numbers as Reykja and there are always quite a few good fish along with the smaller ones. But as the tale told us, this French fly fisherman hooked and landed a very good brown. Sorry, we've forgot the centimetre measurement, what we remember is the 3 pound estimation. A very, very good brown trout by any standards. This particular French angler of course released the fish following a photo session, but he later framed a pix of the trout and inserted the fly that caught it inside the frame. The pix became a mantelpiece item.
So what? Why did this nice litle angling tale move us? Because we suddenly realized how privileged we are. The three of us have been fishing in various rivers and lakes in Iceland for most of our lives. We hardly give a 3 pound brown trout a second glance. A French angler catches one and frames it. We've caught so many all over the place. We do not know how privileged we are.
