Fishing under the shadow of the volcano

Out of control, Eyjafjallajökull blowing its top, emphesizing Iceland as a land of ice and fire, the volcano is also one of Iceland's major glaciers!

Well, it's probably just as well that relatively few foreign anglers have been snared by Iceland's stunning spring fishing so far, as they would not be able to get to or fro the country for the time being due to a pretty substantial sub-glacial volcanic eruption. Eyjafjallajökull (do not even think of trying to pronounce it) has just awakend following two hundred years of slumber.

It was always quite clear that the volcano would eventually blow its top. Despite the 200 years of slumber it has remained VERY active with continuous tremors and reminders. Now we cross our fingers that it does not trigger the nearby Katla which is a different kettle of fish. History tells us that they do tend to combine, but Katla usually takes its time and Katla had a mini movement several years ago so it might perhaps not feel itself to be ready just now!

Anyway, flights are down for the time being. It may be a matter of days before winds shift and the volcanic ash cloud  goes somewhere else! We just hope for the best, the norm is that these eruptions peak in the first days and peter out. You never know of course but that is the norm so we are hoping that this will soon be over.

Some groups fishing the sea trout rivers close to the eruption site were doing just great until the eruption. Most rivers are not affected and the ones that have been will not be affected for long. We heard from Tungulaekur, the group that fished there over the weekend landed 69 sea trout ranging to 83 cm. The river was brimming with fish!
