Eldvatn still producing

Eldvatn Þórðarvörðuhylur 2 2011

A nice one from Eldvatn last Tuesday!

Eldvatn, the south coast sea trout river, has been producing well so far. Lightly fished over the spring period, it is looking more and more like a viable option for the springfishing minded fly fishermen.

The outfitter Pétur Pétursson told us that this is the third spring that fishing is allowed on the enigmatic Eldvatn and he has purpously been shielding the river from big time fishing until more is known of its spring fishing potential. It is a renouned sea trout river in the main southeast sea trout realm, but overfishing took its toll over the years. Pétur and his French partner at G&P Ventures have implanted a strict catch and release policy and the river seems to have been on the mend over the last few seasons.

 Eldvatn-Hundavað2 2011

Another one from out visit to Eldvatn. Fish were all in good condition.

We had a look at the river last Tuesday. We had half a day so good planing was important as we are not that familiar with the river. We picked out four pools, managed to find them all and what‘s more, they all held fish! On the first one, Hundavað, we hooked three and managed to land one of them. On the next pool below, Þórðarvörðuhylur, we saw them sticking their backs out far out, difficult to reach but we still managed to hook two and land one. The third pool, Feðgar, also held fish but they merely followed the fly without striking. On the fourth pool, high up on the river, we didn‘t expect to see a sea trout. We went there to look for char. There were no char however, only, surprisingly, sea troout and we managed one more. These fish were all released according to the rivers policy and we were of course happy to oblige. Recently we have been trying to evaluate how long the sea trout stay in the rivers during the early spring. In some quarters it is thought that the best part of the season is over come mid April. Our conclusion on the other hand is, that although tempertures play a part, most of the rivers have substantial sea trout numbers throughout April, and some of them even have good quality fishing in the the first 1-2 weeks of May
