This American angler fishing the Stadartorfa was surprised by this fine char on the famous brown trout beat. Both photos by Denni, his guide.

Brown trout fishing on the “big” Laxá started below the dam last weekend. The beats above the dam on the other hand start next weekend. It's still rater cold in the north of Iceland and spring about two weeks behind compared with the southern part of the country. But the fishing has been good never the less.

A beautiful brown from the Stadartorfa beat.

On the beats managed by the Angling Club of Reykjavik, Staðartorfa, Múlatorfa and Pretshvammur, things went quite well despite some cold weather. Every now and then it warmed up for a while and on the beats, as well as some others further down river quite a bit of the catch was actually being taken on dry flies. The rest on upstream nymphs and streamers.

One angler fishing the Múlatorfa last Tuesday landed 15 trout, weighing from 1,5 upto 4 pounds. There were a few odd char also of the same weight, so all in all an excellent and quite typical day while early spring fishing the river. Over the whole of the sub-dam beats the total catch is probably up to close to three hundred browns and the fishing will really take off when the weather turns warmer. Which must be just a matter of hours now, with June fast approaching.
