Outstanding start on upper Laxa beats

The upper brown trout beats had an outstanding start over the weekend, even better than below the dam a few days earlier. It all came together, the first really warm weather and the opening season. The result was some 300 browns from the upper beat and an “above average” haul from the lower one.

Most of the browns were in prime condition ranging from 40 to 60 cm and most were taken by upstream nymphing. All the local beats in Myvatnssveit were producing superbly with Geirastadir probably the pick of them. Down in Laxardalur the fishing was well spread out over the beats and the average weight of the fish was somewhat greater than in Myvatnssveit, as usual. There were spells of dry fly fishing on both the beats, but yesterday evening a cold twang swatted down the fishing as a stiff and cold northerly wind wound itself up. The forecast is for it to blow on tomorrow but after that the weather is expected to warm up again.

This one is a bit lean. It probably spawned last year and is yet to restore itself. Photo by Gunnar Örlygsson.
This is an outstanding time to visit Iceland for its world class trout fishing, as the elements are in motion. Spring is breaking into summer, all the migrant birds are here and most of them have already laid their eggs and there is no darkness whatsoever!
