Brown trout fishing on the Minnivallalækur has been normal this season and two main topics make for great news. There are more very big fish around than in recent years, and there are more small fish as well which bodes well for the coming season.

We had a look at the Minni earlier in the week and counted 271 trout in the catch book. Over a short stop we tried our luck on the two pools closest to the lodge, the Husabreida and Stöðvarhylur. Both where teeming with fish, big and small and in between. The weather was calm and the trout where rising in plain sight everywhere.

Despite various experiments we were unable to locate the right dry fly. Most of the recent groups had been fishing well with dries. So we switched to small streamers which we lighting stripped. That produced five hookups in forty minutes! Three landed, one of them a massive 7 pounder! A fish though, as big and beautiful as it was, far from being even in the top ten listing over the biggest trout of the season from the river, some of which have exceeded 10 pounds and the biggest are believed to have weighed 13-14 pounds. Some of them we actually saw the other day and tried for them. But alas, another time and place for them.
