The autumn sea trout fishing in the southeast Vestur Skaftafellssýsla rivers has started slowly this year. Most of the rivers have only had less than average runs so far and catches accordingly. One river stands out though, Tungulaekur, which has been up to its usual great standards.

The river is sparsly fished and the three daily rods were only in action for thirteen days during September. Despite the lack of fishing hours, 181 fish were recorded in the catch book in September. 12 of them were salmon, the rest sea trout of varying sizes.

The salmon added to the rivers best ever salmon total of almost 200 as a whole this season, while the sea trout fishing runs deep into October and the salmon will mostly disapear from the catch during this month.

According to the outfitter Thorarinn Kristinsson, the biggest sea trout were a pair of huge cock fish, one weighing 6,8 kilos, the other 6,6 kilos, according to Icelandic pounds that adds up to 13,5 pounds and just over 13 pounds. There are according to Thorarinn many 6 to 8 pounders and juvenile sea trout ranging from 3 to 5 pounds in the catch as well.  The biggest autumn salmon however weighed 5,2 kilos, 10,5 pounds, while the majority of the salmon were grilse.

This season, Thorarinn opened up a brand new lodge for his guests, a beautilful establishment on the banks of Haedarlaekur, a tributary of Tungulaekur. A lovely little fishing river itself.  Here we have two photos of the lodge and we will treat you to some more later on.
