One of our listed rivers has switched outfitters, but due to the fact that the new one is one of our clients, our coverage of it will hardly change. The river in question is the famous Tungulaekur, which has been hailed as one of the worlds best sea trout rivers.
The river has so far been managed by its owner, Thorarinn Kristinsson, whos father actually paved the way for the rivers outstanding success. Just after the middle of the last century, Kristinn Hallgrímsson bought the neccessary properties and at the time the river from the falls and down, „all“ two kilometers of it was mostly a maze of shallow channels that kept changing following spring and autumn rains.

Only the juntion with Skafta and a few pools at the top of the river held fish and the runs were mostly down to when the autumn rains started. Kristinn took the bulldozers to the lower kilometer and narrowed the flow. Following that, he concentrated on the spoilt vegetation and in a few years there was hardly a scar to be seen. All along he reared sea trout and put them in the river at various stages of juvenality.
The new outfitter, managing the river for 2011 initially, is the company Strengir, http://www.strengir.is/ whom have been among our clients from the start of this website. They also manage the Breiddalsa, Jökla, Hrutafjardara and the famed brown trout river Minnivallalaekur. Tungulaekur has a newly built lodge which is meant for self catering, although full service can be arranged. It will be fished with fly only, with three daily rods and it has a strict catch and release code. Fishing starts on April the 1rst and we are allready counting down. More rivers open that day and we will shortly have a feature on the prospects and the rivers worth mentioning.
