Breiddalsa: Icelands biggest salmon so far!
A huge female salmon was caught on Breiddalsa over the weekend. It measured 108 cm, edging by two cm a salmon caught late last week on Laxa in Adaldalur. However, the salmon was neither photographed nor weighed. Judging by the other huge female salmon caught on Breidda this season, this specimen will have weighed 26 to 28 pounds.
The salmon was caught in Einarshylur and the British angler wielding the rod was using an inch long black Frances tube with a cone head. „These Britons have been fishing Breiddalsa for years and they now how to go about their bussiness. They use powerful double handed rods and heavy leaders. They seldom loe out to the bigger salmon,“ Throstur Ellidason told us.
Another very big salmon was caught on Breiddalsa the day before. It measured 97 cm and weighed just over 21 pounds which is yet another instance of the measurement-versus-weight average chart being turned upside down, as the salmon should have weighed under 20 pounds according to the chart.. It‘s all about their girth and these salmon really have girth. This particular salmon (see photo) had a girth of 53 centimeters.
