Changes have been made on the management of Langa, as the Angling Club of Reykjavik has overtaken the former tenants deal following mutual consent. This is a direct relation to the hardships that most if not all angling outfitters in Iceland have been dealt by the economic crisis in Iceland.
The old days are slowly fading into the mists of time and with them a whole lot of lore and history that has never been put on paper, simply reliant on aging humans passing them on, until…..
Langa may be one of Iceland's very best salmon rivers but it is not known for it's multiple mws's, rather its superstrong grilse. But during seasons of heavy runs there will always be some big fish on the prowl and more often than not they provide someone with great memories. Here is one such tale…
While the Langa didn‘t crack its newly set record of 2008, the river came pretty close and actually recorded one of its best ever seasons, despite seemingly endless draughts that finally took their toll.
They had a totally ridiculous scenario on the Langa earlier this season when a foreign lady, a beginner, was all set to hook up with her maiden salmon. But things are not always what they seem and tend to turn out differently than planned!
Langa, which registered a record catch last season is not that far from matching last seasons acheivements. The fishing has been great and the runs fabulous. The only downer has been the bad conditions. Still, almost 800 salmon have been landed.
Langa is blossoming to life these days. The runs are encreasing and the fishing is picking up accordingly. All the river is now producing and no one can longer say that they have got lucky having been allocated the best beat!
Of the Icelandic rivers so far started, the best „opening“ was without a doubt on Langa yesterday. Sixteen hooked, ten landed, it is one of the best starts for the river for ages. Far better than last year which turned out to be a record season.
As we have reported, last season was a raging success with a record overall total and records broken on many individual rivers. One of the rivers was Langa which smashed its former record of twenty years.
What in fact went on in a river producing a record catch in 2008? We can have a look at Langa river which has a Vaki fish counter in Skuggafoss, a mere several hundred feet from the estuary.
One of Iceland‘s oldest and best established fly fishing schools will be operating again this season despite a new outfitter overtaking the Langa, which has been the schools venue for years.
The Atlantic salmon season of 2009 is fast building on the horizon. And it comes on the back of such a stunning record season that hardly anybody knows what to expect this year. But for the most part people have concluded that the coming season has a considerable margin for slipping from 2008 without losing a label of excellence.
Langá celebrated a magnificent record catch for 2008. All in all, 2.972 salmon were caught, 567 more than the former record which was established twenty years ago. Towards the end, many were hoping that the river would turn the 3.000 salmon corner, but heavy flooding at the end put paid to that.
