Langa: An excellent season and strange goings on!

They had a totally ridiculous scenario on the Langa earlier this season when a foreign lady, a beginner, was all set to hook up with her maiden salmon. But things are not always what they seem and tend to turn out differently than planned!
This happened early July and the lady was being told how to cast and fish her fly in pool number three, just off the seafoss. And she was in luck, a bright grilse snapped at the fly and was on! However due to some grave mistake, the leader slipped off the fly line and that was that. Later in the day, fishing the next beat above, and still without her maiden salmon, the same lady was fishing pool number seven. And again she was into a fish, again a bright grilse. Following several minutes of hustle and bustle, she led the fish towards the shore where her guide waited patiently with the landing net.
However, the guide was quick to spot that something was not as it should be. Or should it? There was another line tangling matters in the net and the guide soon found that there were two flies lodged in the salmons mouth. Both were from his own fly box and the extra line that was tangling matters was the slipped leader from earlier in the day. In other words it was the same fish! There are several variants of the tall tale how an angler has two in the same cast, even catches the same fish later that broke off with him earlier. But that it should be a maiden salmon is unique we feel!
And speaking of Langa. The season is about to end. Despite very low water during much of August, substantial rains revived the fishing and the total is turning out to be excellent. Not the record from last year which was just off 3.000, but a total of 2.400 to 2.500 is not beyond us, although we still have to count from the catch book at the end of the day. Not a record, yet one of the best ever seasons on Langa.
