The big Laxa: The usual huge suspects

The Nes beats on the big Laxa in Adaldalur are producing their usual huge supsects these days. There have been grilse running the lower beats of the Laxa but for some reason they have not added to the big fish on the Nes beats. So, the average weight up there is quite awesome at the moment.
Several dozen fish have been recorded in the catchbook at Nes and Bubbi Morthens, the Icelandic rock star currently making a TV documentary and book about the Laxa, told us today that the average weight of the salmon so far was close to 17 pounds.

„We‘ve been here a few days shooting film, interviewing anglers and doing some fishing ourselves and we have had a fantastic stay. We have on film anglers landing two 20 pounders, one of them caught by an 84 year old British lady, Lilla Rudd, and several other big ones. This morning they caught the first grilse, but I don‘t want them up here, I‘ll shake them off if they grab my fly,“ Bubbi said with a loud laugh.
Despite the lack of grilse the fishing on the Nes beats has been good with the majority of the salmon mws‘s plus several bigger ones. One angler broke his 20 pound duck this morning, Bjarni Júlíusson, a former chairman of the Angling Club of Reykjavík. „I joined the 100 cm club today. It was a beautiful fish and it took a cone headed brown Sunray Shadow, an inch long with a hook number eight. It fought hard but without leaps and drama. The main drama was looking at it, handling it and giving it a good by kiss. Later my son landed two salmon, 14 and 16 pounds and then I wrecked our average weight by landing a 4 pound grilse,“ Bjarni told us.
