Laxa in Adaldalur: Iceland‘s biggest salmon so far!
Mortan with his huge catch this morning.
Iceland‘s biggest salmon so far was caught this morning on the Big Laxa in Adaldalur. The river already had the biggest one this season, so it now has the two biggest salmon of 2009. The fish this morning was a 107 cm long cock fish weighed in at 13 kilos, 26 local pounds, and over 28 lbs.
Mortan Carlsen, a Faeroese angler whom has fished the Big Laxa for years hooked the massive fish using a Wolfowich number 8. The Wolfowich is one of the flies of Lars Terkelsen who has a record of producing flies that work well on Swedens Morrum river. Mortan was fishing the pool Hólmatagl when the big one lurched at the fly. It was a fierce struggle. Once landed the fish was escorted to the hatchery at Laxamýri where it has a job to do later this autumn.
The earlier biggest salmon was one 106 cm just under 13 kilos caught in the middle of August in the pool Dýjaveitur. That one took a small red Frances. Most of the Laxa salmon beats are divided between the Laxa club, headed by Orri Vigfússon and the Nes beats. Both beats have produced a good number of 20 plus pounders this season and the big Laxa remains Iceland‘s foremost river for the oversize salmon.
On the Laxa club beats, some 800 salmon are in the catch book, over three hundred of them are mws‘s. The Nes beats have fewer rods so their catch is lower, close to 200, but they have the same outstanding grilse versus mws comparison. In fact it is fair to say that the grilse runs have been unimpressive on the whole of Laxa this season. And that is for the second year running.
