The Nes beats of Laxa in Adaldal have already produced the biggest salmon of the Icelandic season so far despite not having been formally opened yet. The fish, a 105 cm monster, was landed over the weekend on the famous Vitaðsgjafi pool.

The formal opening is due on Thursday, July the first but the landowners have a few days for themselves over the final week in June. In recent years the fish have been late so these June days have not been greadily used, however this year is a different kettle of fish as there have been surprising early runs and most of the main pools upriver on the Big Laxa already have quite a lot of salmon with new fish running all the time.

At the weekend, Klaus Frimor, a Danish fishing guide and casting instructor fished the Vitaðsgafi and using a half inch Sunray Shadow tube fly, he sparked the fish which first attacked the tube twice and then subsequently nailed the fly in the third attack. Following a huge struggle the salmon was landed, measured, photographed and released. This is the fourth salmon in the 20 plus category to come out of the Big Laxa despite the still short season. On the opening day two were caught, one on the Laxamýri beats and the other at Núpar. A third was then taken by a trout fisherman on the Núpar beats. And now this. The last one however was the biggest of them.
