The season biggest salmon so far was recently landed and released on the Nes beats on the „Big“ Laxa in Adaldalur. It was a whopping 109 cm cock fish, weighing aprox 26 to 27 pounds. It was the anglers first ever salmon, so many an angler has started off worse!
The salmon was caught by Danish angler Steen Foldberg and he was fishing the pool Skerflúðir from a boat, using a number 4 brown version Hairy Mary. After the hookup, he fought the fish for forty minutes, assisted by experienced guide Völundur Hermóðsson, and promptly landed the fish, which was released upon being measured. As few of the biggest salmon in Iceland are put on scales these days, the measurement is the only thing to go by while contemplating the weight. This is the longest salmon caugt in Iceland so far, yet it is hard to say that it was the heaviest. We just earlier reported a salmon that was a mere 1 cm shorter and we have had several 104 to 106 cm salmon that have been extremely deep bodied. But, as said, this one is the longest one so far. Earllier in the day, an even bigger salmon broke off on the pool Grundarhorn and guides have proclaimed that there are several salmon in the river that may exceed 30 pounds. They expect some of them to be landed before the season closes as they tend to take up positions in slower and less deep pools as the season wares on.
