Local angler Rögnvaldur Jónsson looks delighted with his massive 90 cm fresh run sea trout caught a few days ago on the middle section on Laxa in Kjos.

Laxa in Kjos is very low these days and that has been affecting the fishing. Hot and still weather has not been of help either. However the weather is cooling down and while we will have to wait a bit longer for some rain, the cooling and the accompanying wind will help. Despite all the fishing has been presentable and the rivers big sea trout have stood out.

The salmon catch lies somewhere between 300 and 400 and there are several substantial sea trout in the catch book as well. They are harder to catch as they inhabit the quiet pools on the middle beats. Those pools are not for the faint hearted during the low water and calm weather, as the hundreds of big sea trout are there in plain view for all to see. Many of them are huge. They will not stand up to great fishing until we have a significant weather change. During infrequent winds bursts and near dusk, the odd fish have been taken, either by upstreaming nymphing or even by using dry flies. One of a massive 90 cm was landed recently, a huge cock fish. Sea trout of that lenght could well be close to 20 pounds and while very big sea trout are common on the river, this one was still the biggest for at least several years. Most of the trout range from 2 to 4 kilos (4 to 8 pounds!) and there are bigger fish in most of the pools.

There are salmon in the quiet beats as well but up there the sea trout are the main prize. Salmon are still running strong despite the low water but they are hard to catch as they do not come solidly to the fly. The rods fishing the falls at the bottom beat are often hooking up a lot of salmon but loosng most of them. They perhaps hook up with ten fish but land only two or three. And ultra small hitch tubes are almost the only thing worth trying. But this will all change soon. As soon as the weather changes.
