Midfjardara: The best runs are in and the fishing is fantastic

Hitching on one of Midfjardaras tributaries.
Midfjardara has been on fire over the past recent days and yesterday was the biggest day so far as far as the statistics are concerned. The ten rods landed 60 salmon and lost at least the same number as the fish were coming to hitched flies in receeding water. One rod actually landed 27!
According to Rafn Valur Alfreðsson, the rivers manager, the fishing has been progressing evenly up until now. „This has been great to watch, as the runs have been increasing at the same time the water levels have been falling. It was also a little to hot here the other week and as soon as things cooled back down, the fish really started to move. Yesterday was amazing. I was guiding a Danish angler and he was pretty happy with his morning on the Austura with seven landed salmon. But he hasn‘t touched the ground since he landed twenty fish on the Midfjardara beat on the second shift. He took nineteen of them on the hitch. The hitch has been stunning on the Midfjardara system this season and many days it is the only thing that works,“ Rafn told us.
The group on the river will be the best one so far this season. The catch will exceed a hundred fish by a mile. Most of the runs now consist of very big and healthy grilse, most in the 6 pound region. However there are still good numbers og mws‘s around, most of them 10 to 12 pounders. A huge fish, well over 20 pounds, broke off yesterday, so there are real heavyweights in the river as well.
