The salmon season is upon us! The first two rivers kick off on Saturday morning. In the west Nordura starts and up north the huge Blanda. Low water has put the start into perspective.

As usual the board of directors of the Reykjavík Angling Club open Nordura in a flurry of publicity. It is a great place to call in the press, as the first salmon are usually caught in the same super accessible pools in picturesque scenery. This year, very puny snow fields following winter and lack of rain over the spring weeks have not helped. The river is already low and there is no rain in the forecasts over the next few days. But the first salmon are most definitely in the river. There have been several spottings, the most recent being three fine springers on Eyrin on Sunday. There was nobody looking today but earlier spottings hint at the salmon running hard and not stopping in traditional early spring pools. Most likely some will be spotted in pools high up the river, as has been the case over the last few years.

Up north, Blanda does not have this problem. It is a very big body of water, and partially glacier fed although it is clear enough over the main fishing weeks. It tends to either produce outstanding early June catches or…..not. In short, unpredictable.
