This weekend, eight salmon had been written into the catch book for Reykjadalsa, plus almost five hundred brown trout. This is early for the Reykja but despite a rather cold spring, the salmon runs were starting early all over the country.
The salmon have in fact been caught all over the river and in one pool, while landing a salmon, the anglers at large saw 15 others leaving the pool to further their journey upriver. Many feel that the Reykjadalsa is primearily a brown trout river and it is outstanding as such. However the river used to produce several hundred salmon before deteriorating alarmingly several years ago. Perhaps due to overfishing. The brown trout became the mainstay of the river and hold that position, but the salmon have been comeing back in recent years.
Meanwhile the trout fishing has been outstanding as usual and experts on the Reykja feel that the browns are getting bigger by the year!
