The prominent angling club Strengur turned fifty last October and recently threw a birthday party worth waiting for. It started off with the west coast Laxa in Leirarsveit but most of their years have been dedicated to changing Sela in Vopnafjordur from a less than average salmon river to one of the worlds most coveted.
Sela in Vopnafjordur has registered its best ever early season catch total. At noon today, 635 salmon had been recorded in the catch book which is well over one hundred more than the best total according to the same date in earlier years.
Sela in Vopnafjordur had an excellent start to the season this morning, with four rods hooking and landing six salmon frm various pools. Conditions have been mixed but the water level is good and the starting party saw quite a few fish.
The Atlantic salmon season of 2009 is fast building on the horizon. And it comes on the back of such a stunning record season that hardly anybody knows what to expect this year. But for the most part people have concluded that the coming season has a considerable margin for slipping from 2008 without losing a label of excellence.
Despite Iceland having a record season in 2008 poor grilse runs in the east and northeast rivers were still aparent, not to mention the fact that many of the grilse that did arrive were ridiculously small, many of them hardly exceeding 2 pounds. The Icelandic Icelandic Institution of Fresh Water Fisheries looked into the matter.
Selá did very well in 2008 despite the fact that grilse runs were poor in the northeast and east. Selá felt it. There were fewer grilse and many of them stunted. Despite this, the 2008 total was a solid 2.054 salmon, not that far off from 2007’s excellent result, 2.227.
