Sela registers its best ever early season fishing

23.7.2009 News

Sela in Vopnafjordur has registered its best ever early season catch total. At noon today, 635 salmon had been recorded in the catch book which is well over one hundred more than the best total according to the same date in earlier years.  There are substantial mws runs and very, very strong grilse runs at the moment.

Wes Lipner þreytir stórlax í SeláOrri Vigfússon, chairman of the NASF and one of Sela‘s outfitters told us the news today. „We have so far 635 caught. At no time before have such high salmon catches been recorded in Sela so early in the season. This is amazing and long may it continue. The runs have been very impressive but it is difficult to speculate as to how the season will fan out. We of course hope for this tremendous fishing to continue but only time will tell,“ Orri told us.

Another avid fan of Selá and a member of the rivers managing group, Haukur Geir Garðarsson, was in agreement that it was difficult to speculate on the future catches, however one aspect pointed to very big grilse runs. „Most of the grilse are very big and healthy but there are some very small ones as well. The last time we had very big grilse runs, there were these super small fish as well. Some feel that it indicates that the growing conditions in the ocean have been so good that even the puny smolts that would have perished in harsher conditions have survived and reached the river, small though they are,“ Haukur said.
