Straumfjardara: Good fishing, conditions not as bad as last year

Straumfjardara, next door neighbour to Haffjardara, has enjoyed a fine season so far despite the draughts biting hard as July wore on. A good level at the start of the season and a cold spring was of help but they need rain now. And the rain might be close now! Several mws‘s have been in the catch recently.
Ástthor Johannsson, the riverkeeper, sent us an e-meil this week. He said, among other things: „The river is very low these days but still the conditions are by far better than last year. The oldest living in these parts maintain the out of the almost decade we have had so far of the new age, the river was the lowest last year.

I‘ve been around all the while and I agree. We have a water regulating dam at the headwater lake but the surplus water ran out ten days ago so we, and the river, are running on hope these days and thank God there is plenty of hope on this peninsula. Oh, and the fishing has been good despite the low water and there are huge numbers of fish in the river. And there are fresh runs all the time. We have even had a speight of big fish recently. My daughter Svanhildur for example caught a 93 cm cock fish in Sjávarfoss earlier in the week on a Green But number 14 and a female fish the same day measured 87 cm before being released. Two other almost as big were also caught and released on other pools and as Strauma is mainly a grilse river, this is exciting news to us.
Ástthor went on: „As far as the fishing is concerned, the river has produced over two hundred and as we anticipate rain as the last weeks of the season appear on the horizone, we fully expect at least as many to be added. Perhaps even more, we‘ll have to see, that is purely down to the conditions towards the end of the season.“
