New website for Straumfjardara

Fossinn í Straumfjarðará

One of our clients, the outfitters of Straumfjardara, have opened a new website. It is well worth looking at, as great care and fineness have been put into its setup.

Straumfjardara is very unique in Iceland as it is one of the few rod rivers, yet has a full service setup. It is fished with only four rods, yet has a newly built top lodge with a cook and river keeper. The website is a good one and as it has an English language section it should merit some interest. The Icelandic section is still somewhat better stocked but the English section is up and coming. One point made in the Icelandic sector is the change in flies most used for the salmon. For instance 2010 did not yield a single salmon on the old traditonal favorite Hairy Mary. Several others were hardly mentioned, while most of the salmon fell to the various types of the Frances/Black Eyed Prawn and the high jumper Sunrey Shadow, most often used as a large floating tube fly, and sometimes as well as a huge sinking submarine. Some puritan fly fishermen view the fly with a sort of repugnance and we have heard one such refer to it as a drowned pregnant rat, while the outfitter of Straumfjardara refers to it as the Wooly Spoon....

It should not be forgotten though, that while many salmon do fall to the large intimidating types of the Sunrey, it is also quite often fished as a small floating tube fly. Very delicate stuff as well that is....but please have a look at  http://www.straumfjardara.is/
