Looking at some of the top pools: Hnausastrengur

Several pools throughout Iceland are better than others. Starting as of now, we will have a look at a few of them. At first sight the Hnausastrengur on Vatnsdalsa looks like being the top producer. But perhaps further research will reveil a different pool. But until then…
As we had earlier reported, the Vatnsdalsa boasted a record catch this season. 1.388 salmon were brought to the bank. The former record was not steamrollered by any means, as it was one salmon less and dated back to the year 1987 so it could be said that a new record was overdue.

Hnausastrengur, or Hnausi, has long been Vatnsdalsa's top producing pool. It is the bottom pool on the salmon beats. Vatnsdalsa is a seven rod river, two of which operate below the lake Flodid. Flodid is shallow and often very warm, resulting in it congesting with aquatic growth. This tends in some seasons to delay the salmon from entering the beats above the lake. As the river leaves the lake, two pool are directly below the mouth, Holakvorn and Skriduvad. Below them the river breaks into a short fast section which ends in the almost lake-like Hnausastrengur.
So to the statistics, Hnausastrengur produced 523 salmon this season! And add to that, Skriduvad produced 78 salmon and Holakvorn 36, between them 114 salmon. Add them to Hnausi's 523 and you have a total of 673 salmon out of a total of 1.388. Just a few fish off being half of the catch!
Looking at the two photos, the upper one is an airiel view of Hnausi, the other two named pools and the lake, the lake being at the top of the photo and Hnausi from the middle and downward. The lower photo shows an airborn mws on Hnausi. Both photos are from www.vatnsdalsa.is
