Vatnsdalsa: Fine start all things considered

2010 Vatnsdalsá

Vatnsdalsa started off quite well considering the conditions have not been at all favourable for the river. Never the less salmon were in by the numbers and seven were landed on the first two shifts, five big and good looking mws's and two very big grilse.

The conditions in question were the lingering hot weather that has forced the salmon to pile up in the two major pools below the Flóðið lake just above the bottom salmon beat. Flóðið is weedy and shallow and gets very hot during hot days and there have been quite a few of them recently. The salmon that have been caught have mostly been hitched during short spells of wind, while others have been caught by using very small cone headed tubes, with hook sizes down to 18!

It is obvious to everyone that the fishing would have been far better had the conditions been better, as Vatnsdalsa has had substantial runs already, more than usual at this early stage of the season as is the trend on Icelandic rivers this season.
