Big salmon on Vatnsdalsa

The salmon season is getting short on remaining weeks and overall we are looking at a good average season. Which means few record catches bein reported, yet most rivers alive with fish. In some places the average weight has been outstanding.

Like Vatnsdalsa for instance. Last night the river had produced 590 salmon which is off from last year. This is due to less prolific grilse runs. The mws runs have though been very good, so the average weight of the salmon being caught is outsanding, standing at almost 9 pounds. Seven salmon have crahsed the 100 cm barrier that is supposed to be 20 plus pound fish, although it is common knowlage here that several 96 to 99 cm salmon are indeed 20 pounds or more.
Over the past few days three more 20pound-plus have been landed in Vatnsdalsa, a 104 cm in Linufljot, a 103 cm in Hlíðarfljót and a 100 cm in the known big fish pool Hnausastrengur. The last salmon was a first for the respective angler, which was not a he but a she. The photos above show the 100 cm (upper photo) and 104 cm (lower photo). They are on display at www.vatnsdalsa.is which is the outfitters website.
