Self catering means simply you cater to yourself. Many of Iceland‘s rivers have self catering lodges. They are usually rivers with two to four daily rods. Usually intimate groups take all the rods for a cozy atmosphere. Many of these rivers have lower season totals than the big rivers but if the average catch per rod is worked out these rivers tend to come out just as good as the more famous rivers with the big full service lodges. Often they are even proven to be better value for money.

The lodges are generally excellent and as in the full service corridor, there has been overtime work to build new lodges and rebuild others to keep up with the competition. Very many of these lodges have at least one of the two, jacuzzy or sauna and they all sport gas driven barbeques. Many groups on these rivers have been there for years and have built up huge eating ceremonies and there is no doubt that a quite different atmosphere to the one at the full service lodges, has been established through the intimacy of the lodges and the rivers.

So it is of no surprise that among the local anglers, the self catering rivers are at least as popular and many locals hardly ever go to the „hotels“, as they get the maximum from fishing the self catering rivers.
