Holkna
A lovely Holkna pool.
Holkna is one of the rivers of the remote northeast Thistilfjordur. The fjord contains several rivers, among them Hafralonsa and Svalbardsa, two of our listed rivers. These rivers all have similarities bred by their familiarity. They have a wild remote look about them and all have a reputation for big salmon. While Holkna may be the least known of these rivers it is still a very interesting river.
Holkna is fished with only two daily rods and has 27 numbered pools, many of them fantastic looking for fly fishing. I is similar to the other Thistilfjordur-rivers in that a inland foss stops all migrant fish and most of the river is in a shallow canyon. A 4x4 path leads most of the way to the falls but from the end of it you still need to walk for perhaps ten minutes. It is an enchanting area as are many of the pools along the way.
Holkna has the same big fish reputation as the other Thistilfjordur rivers.
For years Holkna was leased and fished exclusively by a group of Swiss anglers. They hardly fished for more than 4 to 6 weeks so the season totals were hardly enlightening as to how much the river was capable of producing. Under the Swiss, the river usually produced 40 to 70 salmon. Later and Icelandic group, Flugan, leased the river but were never sold out. Still the totals rose under their management and last year the river produced between 140 and 150 salmon which is far from bad according to the general attendance. The new outfitters are Lax ehf, clients of AnglingIceland.is and they will be introducing a catch and release policy which will in all probability increase the catch levels.
Holkna has a small but very well equipped self catering lodge. It is a typical self catering river and perfect for families or small groups og friends. Upon request furter service is available though
