A late season mws is carefully unhooked.

Hrutafjardara closed with a total of 503 salmon which is no less than outstanding according to the long spell of bad conditions the river suffered. It is despite all well above the rivers long term average of just over 250 salmon on its three daily rods.

It sported this mysterious looking wound, which did not though seem to affect it...

On its way back home....

Hruta produced 647 salmon last season and would without a doubt done the same this season had not a very long spell of draught pulled the river level down. The river was packed with fish but the fishing slowed down due to the bad luck weather. But further on the upside, as in many other Icelandic rivers, the mws‘s were clearly back in momentum and there were more sea char filling the estuary pools than over the last years. Some of them huge as well, as fish up to 7-8 pounds were registered.

A beautiful Arctic char from Hruta. This is a three pounder but far bigger fish were caught as well.

So all in all, a fine season for the ever popular Hruta, and the outfitter Throstur Ellidason at Strengir told us that as conditions cannot get any worse than they were this year, there was no need but to view the upcoming season of 2011 with the utmost of optimism!
