Some 180 salmon were caught in Jökla and her tributaries in the 2008 season. That is 60 salmon up from 2007 and while the manager Þröstur Elliðason says that he would have loved to see a sharper upward curve, he is nevertheless thankful and upbeat that his experiment at least withheld its upward spiral. “We will be hoping for a sharper improvement next year for sure,” Þröstur told us recently.
Apart from the salmon fishing there were good char runs, especially in Fögruhlíðará which turned up better runs than over the last few seasons, fueling the hope that sea char are back in the ascendancy after several off years. Kaldá also had some fine big char and some anglers content to walking the banks of middle Fögruhlíðará were amazed at the quality of the brown trout fishing they had no idea was to be had there!
