This 21 pounder was the seasons biggest on Laxá í Nesjum. We are sorry to say that it bled to death.

Laxá í Nesjum finished with a fine total of 162 salmon caught on two daily rods. That is a mere few salmon less than in 2007. This season the fishing fanned better out over the season compared to last season when most of the fish were caught during a hectic spell in September when the rains finally started. The runs were mostly very good sized grilse and there were few if any of the very small grilse that entered the northeast- and east coast rivers. There were quite a few good sized mws’s as well, most of them 10 to 13 pounders.

Two salmon actually exceeded twenty pounds. One of them had to be killed as it bled profusely. Indeed scales were taken off the salmon instead and the readings were that the monster had fed in the sea for only two winters. It shows the great growth tendency of some salmon, as in Iceland fish of this size are expected to have dwelt in the sea for three winters.

The record catch for Laxá í Nesjum is 204 salmon caught in 2004. This season’s total is far above the rivers average catch over the last ten years or so.
