A few other top pools
Looking at several other pools following our article on Hnausi on Vatnsdalsa it is astonishing how prolific very small pools on tiny streams can be. One such pool is the Bridge pool on the Leirvogsa which stands at best as a small stream. Yet it is one of the countries best salmon “rivers”.

The river is fished with only two rods and produced an outstanding 877 salmon last season making it one of the countries best rivers. The Bridge pool is very small as is the river and the reason for this unusual haul, a staggering 222 salmon, is the fact that long draughts during the summer stalled the runs, keeping them at the bottom end of the river far into the season. The Bridge pool is at the top of this bottom end area and it was stacked with fish as were numerous other potholes below the bridge. The Bridge pool is usually wormed so this catch was mostly pulled out by worm fishermen, although several anglers actually found out that the pool was in fact excellent for hitching.
Another river, Andakilsa, has two pools of the same dominant quality. One is called simply Þrír, meaning Three, the number of the pool on the fishing map. Out of the rivers season total of 694, Three produced 211 salmon, and the next pool, Upper Fossbakkahylur weighed in with 191 salmon. So the two of them combined for 402 out of a catch of 694. Andakilsa is a medium volume river fished with two daily rods.

Looking at an even more dominant pool, we stop at the Strenghorn on the Straumar beat in Hvita. The Straumar beat produced 368 salmon on two daily rods. Strenghorn had 239 and if you add on 64 from “Bugt”, which is basically the same pool, we get a total of 303 out of 368!
