Tungua
Almost a spate in Tungua last autumn and great conditions. Photo gg.
Tungua is Grimsa’s small delicate tributary and sold separately. Stemming from inland lakes, Tungua is in a wolrd of its own and particularly popular with families and small groups of friends that wish to fish together in almost total solitude. There are only two or three farms in the valley and you have a space and time as if it all stands still.

Tungua is suspect to draughts and needs rain from time to time. Not only to hold its own level but so the salmon do not pile up in the junction pool in Grimsa. The junction is one of Grimsa’s better pools and once the rain is in place along with improving water levels it turns out that Tungua has a deceptively large stock of fish.

Tungua has its own self catering lodge midway up the valley. It is fished with two daily rods and will produce anywhere from 50 to 200 salmon in a season, according to how healthy the runs are and how the water levels fan out over the season. It is fished with both fly and worms but the better pools on the river are great quality fly pools, among them Englandsfoss, Reykjafljót, Litlihylur, Stekkjarfljót and Myrkhylur. The season is short, the river doen’t open up until 10.July and stops at September 20.
