The operators of Vatnsa have decided to have an official hitch week next summer following some outstanding results with hitched tube flies.

Ásgeir Ásmundsson, the rivers caretaker told us that this had been prompted by the results of a Japanese angler that visited Vatnsa last summer. „I guided him for three days early in the season when the salmon were just starting to appear in the river.

Same fish as above takes off having been hooked!

He used only hitch tubes and landed 22 salmon, hooked and lost just as many and that‘s excluding all the action with salmon following the fly and hitting it without hooking up. It was such a feast that we decided to have a whole week next season of exclusive hitching. It will be interesting to see the results and it will also be interesting to see how the salmon follow up themselves. How will they we the more traditional fly fishing and flies following a whole week of hitching?“

As it was, Vatnsa turned out to have by far the best average catch per daily rod as was looking obvious late on. That in fact makes it the top producing river in Iceland in 2010.
