Good season on Vesturdalsa

An angler releasing a mws on Vesturdalsa.
The small and delicate Vesturdalsa had a good season. Until recently the river was the center of a research program aimed at restoring faltering salmon stocks. It was purely fly fished with a strict catch and release policy and it seems to have done its bit in reviving the river.
The northeast Vesturdalsa is a three rod river and has good char runs alongside the salmon. The char had been in decline as well, but the rivers showing this year points to good recovery. 206 salmon where registered and there was a healthy ratio of mws‘s versus grilse as always. The biggest was a twenty pounder and there were two aprox neinteen pounders as well. All where released. A fish counter in the middle of the river was taken out at the end of September and it registered just under 400 salmon, so the river has a healthy look about it.
The char were back in numbers this season, one thousand were registered in the catch book which is a great improvement following several lean years. It‘s a pretty good haul considering the fact that most anglers on the river are hunting salmon and the char are mere sideshows.
